A day spent on the Athens Acropolis in the spring of 1978 happened to occur just as the 30-year restoration program recently completed was just beginning. Workmen were erecting scaffolding on the Parthenon, Erechtheum, and Propylaea. Tourists nevertheless picked their way around the site. Workmen were erecting scaffolding on the Parthenon, Erechtheum, and Propylaea. Tourists nevertheless picked their way around the site. Details of the damage to the exquisite marble workmanship made me quite sad and some images may reflect this. Teachers of ancient history, archaeology, and architectural restoration may find these pictures interesting or useful. Technical note: the originals are Kodachrome slides, made with my Canon F1. The digital version are scans made recently in my Nikon CoolscanIVED scanner.
